Persistent joint pain and stiffness limit daily activities. Red light therapy, also known as Photobiomodulation (PBM), is a non-invasive adjunct receiving increasing scientific attention.

How does it work for joints?

Red light is absorbed by the enzyme cytochrome c oxidase in the cells surrounding the joint, increasing energy production (ATP). More ATP means more energy for repair processes and a tempered inflammatory response. Wavelengths of 660 nm work on superficial tissue; near-infrared light such as 850 nm penetrates several centimeters and reaches the joint capsule.

What does the science say?

A clinical study in Photobiomodulation, Photomedicine, and Laser Surgery (2024) described a clear reduction in knee pain after several weeks of 850 nm exposure. An earlier trial in Clinical Rehabilitation reported less joint swelling compared with placebo. In the finger joints, an improvement in comfort and function was measured after eight sessions.
