Scars from surgery, injuries, or acne may be supported in their healing with red light therapy. It is one of the oldest-studied applications of Photobiomodulation.

The science

In 1967, Hungarian physician Endre Mester observed that low-energy red laser light supported skin healing. Since then, many studies have described how red and near-infrared light support the stages of scar healing: fibroblasts for collagen production, new blood vessels for circulation, and a moderated inflammatory response.

Different types of scars

For raised scars, red light helps normalize the collagen structure. For depressed scars, such as acne scars, it supports the production of new collagen to make the skin’s surface more even.
